Masters of Science?

Wednesday, March 21st, 2007

I am attempting to apply for a masters.    There are a lot of factors I am looking at, cost, quality of school, whether or not the deadline for application to masters has passed (doh).
The hard part about applications are narrowing down what colleges to apply for.   There are more I want to apply for, but I want to apply some where in the new england - new york area.   I wish that there were a good area on the internet to discuss good choices for grad schools in computer science.   Comparative reviews would be nice.   The best I’ve found is a list by usnews, that I had to pay $15 dollars for.

How I lost my domain because of Yahoo Tech Support, and Why MelbourneIT Sucks

Wednesday, March 7th, 2007

I just went through a month of chaos trying to get this domain back into my hands.

My brother had a yahoo account, and I wanted to transfer it to my yahoo account so that I could make payments.
I called up yahoo tech support, and they explained that they are unable to directly transfer domains across accounts.   So they instead transferred it to MelbourneIT, and told me that all I needed to do was “type a key into yahoo small business domains website”.

Well, it didn’t work.   Although I had payed yahoo 50 dollars for 5 years of service, they didn’t renew the domain with MelbourneIT.   Apparently, the process was incomplete, there were more steps not made clear to me by the customer service.

So after the domain expired, I called yahoo, asking what happened, and they explained how there was nothing they can do.   At one point in trying to explain it to me, one tech support told me that Yahoo and MelbourneIT are the same company (not true).   I had to buy the domain through Melbourne (for over double the cost of yahoo or godaddy).   Yahoo refunded the 50 dollars I had paid them, (this, after I complained because they told me that I was now paying for the “service” of the admin tools for the domain I did not own, not for the actual domain, and that I might lose my dispute).
MelbourneIT sucks, however.   They did not respond to my emails.   They are in Australia, and have no local or 1-800 number to call.   Therefore, having no contact with them, I was basically forced to pay them because I could not explain the situation to them of why they should unlock my domain and let me transfer it to a new registrar.

I’m now using godaddy.   Hopefully things work out better next time.   (Ownership hasn’t entirely transferred over to godaddy, so hopefully melbourneIT accepts the transfer)
